What happens if you don't get wisdom teeth removed?

What happens if you don't get wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of our dentition and usually erupt in early adulthood. However, there can often be problems with the eruption of these teeth. In this case, wisdom tooth extraction may be necessary.

Headaches, jaw tightness and sore gums. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you most likely have a problem with your wisdom teeth.

Is it really necessary to have wisdom teeth removed?

There are many reasons why wisdom teeth may need to be extracted. These reasons may be the following:

  • Insufficient space: When there is not enough space in the mouth, wisdom teeth can become crowded or crooked to make room for other teeth.
  • Pain and discomfort: They can cause infection, inflammation or pain.
  • Pressure on other teeth: They can put pressure on surrounding teeth, leading to tooth decay or loss.

Before the extraction, the dentist will take x-rays to assess the position, size and orientation of your wisdom tooth. This allows for better planning of what needs to be done during the procedure. It is also important to discuss your current health condition with the dentist, as some health problems can affect the healing process after wisdom tooth extraction.

A wisdom tooth extraction is usually completed in a very short time. The dentist first cuts the tissue around the tooth and then gently removes the tooth. Stitches may be placed in place of the extracted tooth and the mouth area is cleaned with a gauze swab. Pain or discomfort during the procedure is usually minimal because local anesthesia is used. However, mild pain, swelling and bleeding may occur after the procedure.

After wisdom tooth extraction, your dentist will give you instructions on how to maintain oral hygiene and how to go through the healing process:

  • Pain and Swelling: Post-procedure pain and swelling are normal, but these symptoms diminish over time.
  • Diet: It is important to eat soft foods and avoid hot and spicy foods.
  • Medicines: You should take the medicines recommended by your doctor regularly.
  • Hygiene: You should pay special attention to oral hygiene.

The healing process can usually take a few days or a few weeks.

Don't forget to have regular dental check-ups for oral and dental health.

What you need to know about what kind of problems wisdom teeth can cause if they are not extracted:

  • Tooth decay: Given that wisdom teeth are located in the back area and are often difficult to brush and clean, decay can occur in these teeth. Decay can cause damage to the tooth structure and pain.
  • Gum infection: Symptoms such as swelling, tenderness and redness of the gum tissue around the wisdom teeth can occur. If an infection occurs around the tooth, gum disease and abscesses can form. This can negatively affect your oral health and cause severe pain.
  • Tooth impaction: If there is not enough space in your jaw structure or if your wisdom tooth is not in a favorable position in the jaw, this tooth can press on other teeth and get stuck. This can lead to tooth decay, crowding and jaw problems.
  • Cyst or tumor formation: Over time, cysts or tumors can form in the tissues around the wisdom tooth. These formations can grow under the tooth and damage the surrounding bone and tooth structure.

These complications can be rare, and for some people wisdom teeth may not cause any problems at all. However, if you are experiencing symptoms or if your dentist recommends an extraction, it may be a good option to have your wisdom teeth removed to prevent these problems and maintain your oral health.

Remember, every individual's situation is different and the need for wisdom tooth extraction is a personal decision. It is important to consider your dentist's recommendations and evaluate your options.
